"Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew. This one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next." Arundhati Roy (2020)
Bodies:On:Live – Magdalena:On:Line is the first online Magdalena festival; it continues the Magdalena tradition of international festivals that have, for over three decades, brought together women theatre and performance makers in intense, nourishing, physical encounters. In the current global context, Bodies:On: Live offers an online space for the evolution of this tradition, inviting embodied practitioners, those who are experienced in performing online and those new to the field. The programme of engaging and inspiring work will be accessible via the internet to international participants and audience.

What happens to theatre when bodies are distant, when here is also there?
The Magdalena Project is a dynamic cross-cultural network of women’s theatre and performance, facilitating critical discussion, support and training. It is a nexus for diverse performance groups and individuals whose common interest lies in a commitment to ensuring the visibility of women’s artistic endeavour.
In its 35+ years of activities, The Magdalena Project Network has had over 100 proximal festivals and gatherings in more than 20 countries; has produced many films, published books and its own journal, The Open Page, has reached 2000+ monthly newsletter subscribers in 35+ countries and has a website, currently in three languages (English, Spanish, Portuguese).
The branches of the Magdalena Project extend far and wide: over international borders and across generations. Groups meet in real time and place as well as online to share, engender and promulgate work and ideas. Largely surviving on the goodwill of its members and sponsors, it is a testimony to what we can achieve together in spirit of community and unity.
The Bodies:On:Live organising team is composed of world-leading artists, festival directors, academics, technologists and cyberformance experts, who are based in the UK, Hong Kong, Germany, Brazil, Chile, Serbia and Australia.
